that he claimed he changed before he died and became confused. Yaḥyá said: No, he did not become confused, nor did he change. I asked Yaḥyá: Is he reliable? He said: Reliable and trustworthy. I said: It seems from the collective statements of the scholars about him that he changed slightly at the end of his life, and for this reason, the ḥāfiẓ said about him: "Truthful, but changed at the end." However, al-Bukhārī did not include him, so the ḥadīth is only ḥasan. The other wording that al-Ḥākim referred to is—apparently—what was narrated by Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith from al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who said: "I said, O Messenger of Allāh, teach me something to ask Allāh for. He said: Ask Allāh for well-being. I waited for a few days, then I came and said: O Messenger of Allāh, teach me something to ask Allāh for. He said to me: O ʿAbbās, O uncle of the Messenger of Allāh! Ask Allāh for well-being in this world and the Hereafter." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (726), al-Tirmidhī (2/266), and Aḥmad (1/209). Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal heard from al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib." I said: But Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, who is the Hāshimī their client, has weakness due to his memory, so perhaps his authentication of it is in consideration of its previous chain and supporting narrations, as a similar ḥadīth was narrated from Anas, and the last sentence of it came from the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar as marfūʿ, and it is included in "al-Mishkāt" (2490). Al-Haythamī said about the ḥadīth (10/175): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, and it includes Hilāl ibn Khabbāb who is reliable, although some have weakened him, and the rest of its narrators are reliable."
