ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī narrated to us, Rashdīn ibn Kurayb narrated to us from his father who said: "I used to lead Ibn ʿAbbās in the alley of Abū Lahab, and that was after he lost his sight. He said: I heard my father say: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: " and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād [chain of transmission] consists of trustworthy men, the men of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], except for Rashdīn ibn Kurayb, who is weak as mentioned in "Taqrīb," and he was inconsistent in his wording. He narrated it once like this, and another time as if it were a story that occurred during the time of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and in his presence! So Abū Yaʿlá said in "Musnad" (4/1580): al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥammād al-Kūfī narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī informed us from Ibn Kurayb from his father who said: "I used to lead Ibn ʿAbbās in the alley of Abū Lahab. He said: O Kurayb! Have we reached such and such a place? I said: You are at it now. He said: ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib narrated to me saying: 'While I was with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in this place, a man came strutting between his two garments, looking at his shoulders, having been impressed with himself. Then Allāh caused the earth to swallow him in this place, and he will continue to sink in it until the Day of Resurrection.'" This isnād also consists of trustworthy men except for Rashdīn, and with this wording, it was mentioned by al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ" (5/125) and he said: "It was narrated by Abū Yaʿlá, al-Ṭabarānī, and al-Bazzār in a similar manner with brevity, and in it is Rashdīn ibn Kurayb, who is weak." I said: The first wording is closer to correctness because it has a corroborating report from the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr and Abū Hurayrah, raised [to the Prophet] with the wording: "While a man was dragging his lower garment, the earth swallowed him, and he will continue to sink in it until the Day of Resurrection." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (4/73).
