and it was narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Īmān" (no. 43) from him, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: "It was said, O Messenger of Allāh, which faith is best? He said: Patience and generosity." Its narrators are trustworthy, so it is authentic except for the ʿanʿanah of al-Baṣrī. The ḥadīth is authentic in text because it has two supporting narrations with Aḥmad from the ḥadīth of ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah and ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, and the first of them was also narrated by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Zuhd al-Kabīr" (87/1) through another chain from him. I found another supporting narration, mursal, narrated by Ibn Naṣr in "al-Ṣalāh" (p. 143/2) from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, raised [to the Prophet]. Its chain is authentic, and it is a portion of a ḥadīth I mentioned under ḥadīth (1491).

- "The best jihad is to strive against your own self and desires for the sake of Allāh." It was narrated by Ibn Mallaḥ in "al-Amālī" (3/2), Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (2/249), and al-Daylamī (1/1/127) from Hishām ibn Khālid, who narrated to us from Abū Khalīd ʿUtbah ibn Ḥammād—there was no one in Damascus more knowledgeable of the Book of Allāh than him—from Saʿīd, from Qatādah, from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ziyād, from Abū Dharr, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): Which jihad is best? He said: To strive... Abū Nuʿaym said: "This is what Qatādah said, and Saʿīd ibn Bashīr was unique in narrating it from him, and Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr differed from Qatādah, saying: from al-ʿAlāʾ from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ." I say: Saʿīd ibn Bashīr is weak as in "al-Taqrīb," so it is not authentic from Qatādah, nor the statement that Suwayd differed from Qatādah as it appears. Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr is trustworthy, from the narrators of Muslim, so if the chain to him is authentic, the ḥadīth is authentic. And Allāh knows best
