"I entered the mosque and found the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sitting alone. He said: 'O Abū Dharr, the mosque has a greeting, and its greeting is two rakʿahs, so stand and perform them.' So I stood and performed them, then returned and sat with him. I said, 'O Messenger of Allāh, which deed is best?' He said, 'Faith in Allāh and striving in His cause.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allāh...'" The ḥadīth continues at length and is very long. I said: Its isnād is weak. Ibrāhīm ibn Hishām, Abū Ḥātim said: "A liar." I said: However, the ḥadīth of the chapter is authentic, as it was recorded by Muslim (1/62) through the route of Abū Marwāḥ al-Laythī from Abū Dharr who said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allāh, which deeds are best?' He said, 'Faith in Allāh and striving in His cause.'" He said: I said, 'Which slaves are best to free?' He said: 'The most valuable to their owners and the most expensive.' He said: I said, 'What if I cannot do that?' He said: 'Help a laborer or make something for someone who is clumsy.' He said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allāh, what if I am unable to do some of the work?' He said: 'Keep your harm away from people, for it is a charity from you to yourself.'"
- "The best of the believers in Islam is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe, and the best striving is the one who strives against his own self for the sake of Allāh, and the best of the emigrants is the one who strives against his own self and desires for the sake of Allāh." It was recorded by Ibn Naṣr in "al-Ṣalāh" (142/2) with a sound chain from Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ziyād who said: "A man asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, 'Which of the believers is best in Islam?' He said..." and he mentioned it. At the end, he said: "Did you say this, O ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, or did the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say it?' He said: 'Rather, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it.'" I said: This isnād is authentic, and all its narrators are trustworthy
