there is a supporting narration that is mawqūf, reported by Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar, who used to say: "The best deed after prayer is jihād in the way of Allāh, the Exalted." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/32). I said: Its isnād is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs. The first part of it was elevated by ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿUmrī from Nāfiʿ with it. It was recorded by al-Khaṭīb in "al-Tārīkh" (12/66) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayr al-Ḥimṣī from him with the wording: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was asked: Which deeds are best? He said: Prayer at its earliest time." He mentioned it in the biography of ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Mukhallad ibn Khāzim Abū al-Ṭayyib al-Kūfī, and he did not mention any criticism or endorsement about him. There is another supporting narration from Anas who said: "I asked the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) which deeds are best? He said: Prayer at its appointed time." It was recorded by al-Khaṭīb (10/286) in the biography of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Ayyūb al-Ḍarīr, from whom a group of trustworthy narrators transmitted, and he died in the year (315), and no criticism or endorsement was mentioned about him, and those above him are trustworthy from the men of Muslim. Al-Suyūṭī included it in "al-Jāmiʿ" from the narration of al-Khaṭīb from Anas with the wording: "The best deeds are prayer at its appointed time, honoring parents, and jihād in the way of Allāh." I did not see it in "Fahras al-Tārīkh" in this complete form. Attributing it to him alone is clearly insufficient, so attributing it to Aḥmad would have been more appropriate, and mentioning it with the wording of "the two Shaykhs": "then... then..." is more appropriate, as is not hidden from those with understanding.
- "The best deed is faith in Allāh and jihād in the way of Allāh." It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (94) from Ibrāhīm ibn Hishām ibn Yaḥyá ibn Yaḥyá al-Ghassānī, who narrated to us from his father, from his grandfather, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū Dharr who said:
