- "Yūsuf was given half of beauty." Narrated by Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Muṣannaf" (7/68/2). And by Aḥmad (3/286): ʿAffān narrated to us from Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Thābit from Anas as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I say: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim. It was also narrated by al-Wāḥidī in his "Tafsīr" (88/2) through the route of Mūsá ibn Ismāʿīl who narrated from Ḥammād ibn Salamah with it. It was also extracted by Ibn Jarīr in "al-Tafsīr" (12/122-123), al-Ḥākim (2/570), Ibn ʿAdī (261/1), and Ibn ʿAsākir (19/218/1) through other routes from ʿAffān with it, and they added: "and his mother." The last two added: "meaning Sārah." Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. Ibn ʿAdī said: "I do not know anyone who raised it except ʿAffān, and ʿAffān is more famous, truthful, and reliable than to be said about him anything attributed to weakness." It was also extracted by Muslim (1/99) through another route from Ḥammād ibn Salamah in the ḥadīth of the Isrāʾ, and in it: "Then I saw Yūsuf (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he had been given half of beauty." As for what was extracted by Ibn Jarīr in "al-Tafsīr" (12/123) where he said: Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Ḥakkām narrated to us from Abū Muʿādh from Yūnus from al-Ḥasan that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Yūsuf and his mother were given a third of the beauty of the people of the world, and the people were given two-thirds, or he said: Yūsuf and his mother were given two-thirds and the people were given a third." This is objectionable and false in this wording, as it contradicts the authentic ḥadīth and because its isnād is very weak, for it is mursal and includes Abū Muʿādh whose name is Sulaymān ibn Arqam, who is abandoned, and Ibn Ḥumayd whose name is Muḥammad al-Rāzī is weak.
