- "When a man meets his Muslim brother, let him say: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allāh and His blessings." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3/394) and Ibn al-Sunnī in "The Deeds of the Day and Night" (233) through the route of Khālid al-Ḥadhāʾ from Abū Tamīmah al-Hujaymī from a man of his people who said: I sought the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) but could not find him, so I sat down, and there was a group among whom he was present, but I did not recognize him, and he was reconciling between them. When he finished, some of them stood with him and said: O Messenger of Allāh! When I saw that, I said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allāh! Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allāh?! Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allāh! He said: "Indeed, 'Peace be upon you' is the greeting of the dead." Then he turned to me and said: (and he mentioned it) then the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) replied to me saying: "And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allāh, and upon you be peace and the mercy of Allāh, and upon you be peace and the mercy of Allāh." The context is from al-Tirmidhī, and he said: "A good and authentic ḥadīth." I said: Its chain of narration is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī, and the wording of Ibn al-Sunnī is: "Indeed, 'Peace be upon you' is the greeting of the dead. When one of you meets his brother, let him say: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allāh." Al-Suyūṭī attributed it in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr" (2/123/1 - Maṣūr al-Maktab) to Ibn al-Sunnī only, which is a clear oversight. The first sentence of it was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (2/644) and Aḥmad (3/482) through another route from Abū Tamīmah al-Hujaymī as a marfūʿ ḥadīth with the wording: "Do not say 'Peace be upon you,' for 'Peace be upon you' is the greeting of the dead."
