ʿUqbah: "he mentioned it similarly." meaning in a wording similar to the ḥadīth of Zuhayr: "Samāk ibn Ḥarb narrated to us with the wording: 'Whoever supports his people in wrongdoing is like a camel that falls into a pit and struggles with its tail,'" so he did not narrate the ḥadīth in full. Abū ʿĀmir is ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr al-ʿAqdī, the teacher of Aḥmad mentioned earlier. He was followed by Shuʿbah from Samāk ibn Ḥarb with it, except for his saying "and like the one who..." It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/436) and al-Tirmidhī (no. 2258) who said: "A good and authentic ḥadīth." I say: It is as he said, for its isnād is authentic, its narrators are trustworthy, and to limit it to being merely good is an oversight! He was followed by al-Masʿūdī from Samāk with it. It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/389 and 436). He was followed by Sharīk from Samāk with it, limiting it to his saying: "Whoever lies about me intentionally, let him take his seat in the Fire." It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (no. 30).
"The best of the believers are those with the best character, and the wisest of them are those who remember death the most and prepare for it best. They are the wise ones." It was narrated by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Zuhd al-Kabīr" (52/2) from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Saʿīd ibn Kathīr ibn ʿUfayr, who said: My father narrated to me, Mālik ibn Anas narrated to me from Suhayl ibn Mālik from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar. A man said to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): Which of the believers is best? He said: "The one with the best character." He said: "And which of the believers is the wisest?" He said: "The one who..." So he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is weak, its narrators are trustworthy except for ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Saʿīd, this one,
