"If one of you has a fever, let him pour cold water over himself for three nights at dawn." It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (4/200 and 401) and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah" (Q 106/1) from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĀʾishah, and by Abū Yaʿlá in "his Musnad" (3/953) and through his route by al-Ḍiyāʾ from Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah, both of whom said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us from Ḥumayd from Anas ibn Mālik (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. And al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they both said. Some criticized it with something that does not undermine it, as Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in "al-ʿIlal" (2/337): "I asked my father and Abū Zurʿah about a ḥadīth narrated by Rūḥ ibn ʿUbādah and Ibn ʿĀʾishah from Ḥammād (I said: and he mentioned it). My father said: It was narrated by Mūsá ibn Ismāʿīl and others from Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Ḥumayd from al-Ḥasan from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and this is more likely. Abū Zurʿah said this is a mistake; it is only Ḥumayd from al-Ḥasan from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and this is the correct version." I say: What I see is that both the musnad and the mursal are authentic, as there is no obstacle to Ḥumayd having received it from both sources, narrating it sometimes in one way and sometimes in another, and then Ḥammād ibn Salamah received it likewise and narrated it likewise. And Allāh knows best. The ḥadīth was also attributed by al-Suyūṭī in "al-Jāmiʿ" to al-Nasāʾī, and it appears he means in "his Sunan al-Kubrā," supported by the fact that al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī mentioned that he recorded it in "al-Ṭibb," and it is not from the books of "his Sunan al-Ṣughrā" known as "al-Mujtabá." And Allāh knows best.
