and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" through the route of Mujālid ibn Saʿīd from al-Shaʿbī from ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it, and the wording is that of al-Ṭabarānī. Al-Haythamī said after attributing it to him: "And in it is Mujālid ibn Saʿīd, who was deemed reliable by al-Nasāʾī but weakened by a group." I say: However, the ḥadīth is authentic as it has numerous supporting narrations in the six books and others. I have extracted a group of them in "al-Irwāʾ" (901), and the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAlī will come, if Allāh wills, under number (1917).

"When the believer is present [at death], the angels of mercy come to him with a white silk cloth, and they say: 'Come out, content and pleasing, to the mercy of Allāh and fragrance and a Lord who is not angry.' So it comes out like the best scent of musk, so much so that they pass it to one another until they bring it to the gate of the sky. They say: 'How pleasant is this scent that has come to you from the earth!' They bring it to the spirits of the believers, who are more delighted with it than any of you with his absent one returning to him. They ask him: 'What did so-and-so do? What did so-and-so do?' They say: 'Leave him, for he was in the distress of the world.' When he says: 'Did he not come to you?' They say: 'He was taken to his mother, Hāwiyah.' And when the disbeliever is present [at death], the angels of punishment come to him with a coarse cloth, and they say: 'Come out, displeased and displeasing, to the punishment of Allāh.' So it comes out like the foulest stench of a decaying corpse until they bring it to the gate of the earth. They say: 'How foul is this stench!' until they bring it to the spirits of the disbelievers." It was narrated by al-Nasāʾī (1/260), Ibn Ḥibbān (733), and al-Ḥākim (1/352 and 353) through the route of Qatādah from Qasāmah ibn Zuhayr from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it.
