then Aḥmad also narrated (5/311 and 4/383) through the route of ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "When one of you eats, let him not eat with his left hand, and when he drinks, let him not drink with his left hand, and when he takes, let him not take with his left hand, and when he gives, let him not give with his left hand." I said: And this is a good isnād, its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim, except that it is mursal, for ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah was born during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Ibn Saʿd deemed him trustworthy, as in "al-Taqrīb," and therefore al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "Nataʾij al-Afkār" (1/30/1): "Aḥmad narrated it with a good isnād from ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥah." It is supported by the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar, raised [to the Prophet], except for the phrase: "and when he takes..." and it adds: "for indeed the devil eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand." It was narrated by Muslim (6/109), Abū Dāwūd (2/314 - al-Ḥalabiyyah), al-Dārimī (2/96), as well as Mālik (3/109 - al-Ḥalabiyyah) and Aḥmad (2/8, 33, 80, 106, 128, 135) through various routes from him, and Muslim and Aḥmad added in a narration: "He said: And Nāfiʿ used to add in it: and he does not take with it nor give with it." In a wording by Muslim and Aḥmad: "Let none of you eat with his left hand nor drink..." the ḥadīth. It was also narrated by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1189) and al-Tirmidhī. And the ḥadīth of Jābir from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ who said: "Do not eat with the left hand, for indeed the devil eats with the left hand" was narrated by Muslim (1/108-109), Ibn Mājah (2-303), Aḥmad (3/334, 387), and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (18/87/1).
