I said: Its isnād is authentic; all its narrators are trustworthy, and Maḥmūd ibn Labīd is a young Companion. The ḥadīth has supporting evidence from the narration of ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd from his father, in a marfūʿ form. It was recorded by Ibn Saʿd (3/429). However, his teacher Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar, who is al-Wāqidī, is abandoned. Then he narrated (3/429-430) supporting evidence from the mursal narration of Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm. Its isnād is ḥasan.
- "When he went to relieve himself, he would go far away." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (1/2), al-Nasāʾī (1/8-9), al-Tirmidhī (1/32), al-Dārimī (1/169), Ibn Mājah (1/139), and al-Ḥākim (1/140) through the route of Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr from Abū Salamah from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah with it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." And al-Ḥākim: "Authentic according to the conditions of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I said: Not at all; rather, its isnād is ḥasan because Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr has weakness in his memory, and Muslim only recorded from him as a follow-up. However, the ḥadīth is authentic as it has another route and supporting evidence. It was recorded by al-Dārimī and likewise by Aḥmad (4/244) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn from ʿAmr ibn Wahb al-Thaqafī from al-Mughīrah with it. Its wording with the first: "When he went to relieve himself, he would distance himself." Its isnād is authentic; its narrators are the narrators of the six except for ʿAmr ibn Wahb, whom al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Ḥibbān, al-ʿAjlī, and Ibn Saʿd deemed trustworthy. Aḥmad's wording is similar in the story of wiping over the leather socks. Among its supporting evidence is the ḥadīth of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Qurād who said: I went out with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) to the open area. When he wanted to relieve himself, he would go far away. It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī and Aḥmad (3/443 and 4/224) through the route of Abū Jaʿfar al-Khaṭmī ʿUmayr ibn Yazīd who said: al-Ḥārith ibn Faḍīl and ʿUmārah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Thābit narrated to me from him. This isnād is authentic: Among them is from Jābir with the wording: "When he wanted to relieve himself, he would go until no one could see him." It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Ḥākim through the route of Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Malik from Abū al-Zubayr from him. This isnād is weak because Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Malik, who is Ibn Abī al-Ṣafīr, is truthful but makes many mistakes, and Abū al-Zubayr is a mudallis and narrated it with ʿanʿanah. However, the ḥadīth is authentic due to its preceding supporting evidence. It was also recorded by al-Bayhaqī (1/93).
