- "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (11/195) through the route of al-Aʿmash who said: Mujāhid narrated to me from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā) who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took hold of my shoulders and said: and he mentioned it. Al-ʿUqaylī spoke about this isnād and rejected this phrase "narrated to me" and said: "Al-Aʿmash only narrated it with the phrase 'from Mujāhid' and this is how the companions of al-Aʿmash narrated it from him." I said: And it is supported by the fact that Imām Aḥmad narrated it (2/24) from Sufyān, who is al-Thawrī, and (2/41) from Abū Muʿāwiyah, both from Layth from Mujāhid with it. Ibn ʿAdī also recorded it in "al-Kāmil" (73/2 and 152/2) through the route of Ḥammād ibn Shuʿayb from Abū Yaḥyá al-Qaṭṭāt from Mujāhid. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Layth and Abū Yaḥyá are weak, and the reliance is on the route of al-Aʿmash," thus he did not pay attention to the words of al-ʿUqaylī. The ḥadīth is authentic in any case as it has another route on the condition of the two Shaykhs with the wording: "Worship Allāh as if you see Him." It will appear under number (1473). The complete ḥadīth in al-Bukhārī is: "And Ibn ʿUmar used to say: When evening comes, do not expect [to live till] the morning, and when morning comes, do not expect [to live till] the evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death." It was narrated in its entirety by Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (3/301) through another route from the teacher of al-Bukhārī's teacher, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṭafāwī, from al-Aʿmash from Mujāhid with it. Then he said: "This is an authentic ḥadīth agreed upon from the narration of al-Aʿmash. It was narrated by Layth ibn (Abū) Sulaym from Mujāhid." I said: In the ḥadīth of Layth, the statement of Ibn ʿUmar: When evening comes, is raised to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). So look: "O Ibn ʿUmar, when morning comes," as it contains an addition to the ḥadīth here which is: "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler, and count yourself among the inhabitants of the graves." It was recorded by Aḥmad as mentioned before, and by al-Tirmidhī in "al-Zuhd" and Abū Nuʿaym (1/312 and 313). The latter two have an addition, so look: "O Ibn ʿUmar." Then I found a supporting witness for the addition of the graves from the ḥadīth of ʿAlī ibn Zayd: He narrated to me from someone who heard Abū Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said:
