a man from Bakr ibn Wāʾil said: "Quraysh must cease, or Allāh will place this matter among the majority of the Arabs and others." ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ replied: "You lie, I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say:" and he mentioned it. This is an authentic isnād. It was also narrated from this route by Aḥmad (4/203) and Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in "al-Sunnah" (1009-1011 in my verification). al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan gharīb ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth." It has a corroborating narration with the wording: "Quraysh are the leaders of this matter, so the righteous among the people follow their righteousness, and the wicked follow their wickedness."

"Quraysh are the leaders of this matter, so the righteous among the people follow their righteousness and the wicked follow their wickedness." It is from the ḥadīth of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, and it includes a story narrated by Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed away while Abū Bakr was in a group from Medina." He said: "He came and uncovered his face, kissed him, and said: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how good you are in life and in death. Muḥammad has died, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah.'" and he mentioned the ḥadīth. He said: "Then Abū Bakr and ʿUmar went together until they reached them, and Abū Bakr spoke and did not leave anything revealed about the Anṣār or mentioned by the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) regarding them except that he mentioned it. He said: 'And you know that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: If the people took a valley, and the Anṣār took a valley, I would take the valley of the Anṣār. And you know, O Saʿd, that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: while you were sitting.'" I said: "and he mentioned the ḥadīth." He said: "Saʿd said to him: 'You have spoken the truth, we are the ministers and you are the leaders.'" It was narrated by Aḥmad (vol. 1, no. 18) and its narrators are trustworthy, except that Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān did not meet Abū Bakr as mentioned in "al-Majmaʿ" (5/191). The ḥadīth has supporting narrations from Jābir and another from Abū Hurayrah, and it will come with the wording: "The people follow Quraysh." (Note) al-Suyūṭī attributed this ḥadīth in "al-Jāmiʿ" to Aḥmad from Abū Bakr and Saʿd. He mentioned Saʿd without specification, which might mislead one to think it is Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, as his commentator al-Manāwī specified, but it is not so. Rather, it is Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, for he is the one involved in the story, as known from history.
