It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/146), Ibn Naṣr (66), and Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (3/81) through the chain of Yaḥyá ibn ʿAmr ibn Mālik al-Nakrī from his father, from Abū al-Jawzāʾ, from him. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥadīth that is ḥasan gharīb." Abū Nuʿaym said: "We did not write it as elevated and perfected except from the ḥadīth of Yaḥyá ibn ʿAmr from his father." I said: His father, ʿAmr ibn Mālik, is truthful but has errors. His son, Yaḥyá, is weak, and it is said that Ḥammād ibn Zayd declared him a liar, as in "al-Taqrīb," and "al-Mīzān" listed among his denials the ḥadīths, this being one of them.

"Indeed, Allāh has added for you a prayer to your prayers which is better for you than red camels; it is the two rakʿahs before the dawn prayer." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī (2/469) through the chain of ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Bujayr, who narrated to us from al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd al-Khallāl in Damascus, who narrated to us from Marwān ibn Muḥammad al-Dimashqī, who narrated to us from Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām, from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Naḍrah al-ʿAbdī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it. Al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd said: Yaḥyá ibn Maʿīn said to me: This is a gharīb ḥadīth from the ḥadīth of Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām, and Muʿāwiyah ibn Salām is a narrator of the people of Shām, and he is truthful. The ḥadīth, and whoever did not write his ḥadīth in its complete and incomplete form, is not a ḥadīth scholar. I was informed by Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Khuzaymah that he said: If it were possible for me to travel to Ibn Bujayr for this ḥadīth, I would have traveled to him. Then al-Bayhaqī narrated his chain to Ibn Khuzaymah with this account. I said: And Ibn Bujayr is a great, truthful ḥāfiẓ, and those above him are trustworthy from the men of Muslim, except al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd al-Khallāl, who is also truthful, so the isnād is good. And as al-Bayhaqī said, it is more authentic than the isnād of the ḥadīth of Khārijah regarding the witr, that it is better than red camels, and I have explained its defect in "Ḍaʿīf al-Sunan" (255). And a brief witness for it has passed (number 108).
