he said: Do not say "peace be upon you," for "peace be upon you" is a greeting for the dead. Say: "peace be upon you." He said: I asked: Are you the Messenger of Allāh? He replied: I am the Messenger of Allāh who, if you are afflicted with harm and you supplicate to Him, He will remove it from you. If you are struck by a year of drought and you supplicate to Him, He will cause it to grow for you. If you are in a barren land or desert and your mount is lost, and you supplicate to Him, He will return it to you. I said: Advise me. He mentioned it. And he added after saying: Do not curse anyone: "He said: After that, I did not curse a free man, nor a slave, nor a camel, nor a sheep." al-Tirmidhī did not narrate the story in its entirety and said: "A good and authentic ḥadīth." I said: Its narrators are the narrators of al-Bukhārī except for Abū Ghifār, whose name is al-Muthanná ibn Saʿīd al-Ṭāʾī, and he is trustworthy. It was narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ and al-Nasāʾī, as in al-Targhīb (3/286). I said: It was also narrated by al-Ḥākim (4/186) through another chain from Ibn Tamīmah, and he authenticated it. Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. Aḥmad narrated it (5/64) through the chain of Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ from Abū Tamīmah in a shortened version from his saying: "Call upon Allāh alone" etc., without his saying: "And if a person insults you" etc. Instead, he said: "Even if you pour out your bucket into the vessel of the one seeking water." Its chain is also authentic as previously mentioned in "I Call to Allāh" (421). There is another chain for the ḥadīth, narrated by al-Dūlābī through the chain of Ziyād al-Jaṣṣāṣ from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn who said: Jābir ibn Sulaym al-Hujaymī Abū Juray narrated to us: I came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). The ḥadīth is in a shortened form. Ziyād al-Jaṣṣāṣ is Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād al-Jaṣṣāṣ, who is weak, as mentioned in "al-Khulāṣah" and "al-Taqrīb." There is a third chain with an authentic isnād as well, appearing under number (1352) with the wording: "Do not belittle any good deed." The ḥadīth. It was narrated by Ibn Naṣr (221/2) from Abū al-Silīl from Abū Tamīmah. The last sentence of it "And if a person insults you" has a corroborating narration from Ibn ʿUmar, raised [to the Prophet], with the wording: "If a man insults you with something he knows about you, do not insult him with what you know about him, so that the reward will be yours and the sin will be upon him." It was narrated by Ibn Manīʿ from him as in "al-Jāmiʿ" and its commentator al-Manāwī said:
