then he brought forth a supporting narration from the ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah, elevated [to the Prophet] with a similar meaning, and a second one from Ibn Masʿūd, stopped [at him], and I have previously referenced both, and a third from the ḥadīth of Abū Dharr, with an addition in its text, which I have referenced in "Mishkāt" (5347).

"When he prayed, he would whisper, and he said: 'Did you notice that? I remembered a prophet among the prophets who was given soldiers from his people, and he said: Who can match these or fight these? or words similar to that. So Allāh revealed to him to choose for his people one of three: that I unleash their enemy upon them, or famine, or death. He consulted his people about that, and they said: We leave that to you, you are the prophet of Allāh. So he stood and prayed, and when they were frightened, they would resort to prayer. He said: O Lord, not famine or the enemy, but death. So death was unleashed upon them for three days, and seventy thousand of them died. My whispering that you see is me saying: O Allāh, by You I fight, and by You I strive, and there is no power or strength except by You.'" It was recorded by Ibn Naṣr in "al-Ṣalāh" (35/2): Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, Abū Usāmah informed us, Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah narrated from Thābit al-Banānī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá from Ṣuhayb who said: and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim]. It was also recorded by Imām Aḥmad (4/333, 6/16) through two other chains from Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah with it, and from the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah: Thābit narrated to us with a similar meaning, and it includes that the prayer was the dawn prayer and the whispering was after it during the days of Ḥunayn. al-Dārimī narrated from it (2/217) his saying: O Allāh, by You I strive, and by You I fight, and by You I combat." And both their isnāds are authentic according to the criteria of Muslim.
