and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr is not well-known. Ibn Ḥibbān considered him trustworthy, and in "al-Taqrīb" it is stated: "He is acceptable." The ḥadīth is narrated with the wording: "Whatever you give them is charity for you." It was recorded by al-Ṭayālisī (p. 194, no. 1364): Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Umayyah al-Ḍumrī narrated to me from his father, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb came upon ʿAmr ibn Umayyah al-Ḍumrī while he was bargaining over a cloak in the market. They said: What are you doing, ʿAmr? He said: I am buying this to give it in charity. He [ʿUmar] said to him: Then you are [doing well]. He then went on and returned, asking: ʿAmr, what happened to the cloak? He said: I bought it and gave it in charity. He asked: To whom? He said: To my companion. He asked: And who is your companion? He said: My wife. He asked: And you gave it in charity to your wife?! He said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: the ḥadīth. He [ʿUmar] said: ʿAmr, do not lie about the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). He said: By Allāh, I will not leave you until we go to ʿĀʾishah and ask her. So they went until they entered upon ʿĀʾishah. ʿAmr said to her: O my mother! This is ʿUmar saying: Do not lie about the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). I beseech you by Allāh, did you hear the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say, "Whatever you give them is charity for you"? She said: By Allāh, yes, by Allāh, yes. Al-Haythamī mentioned it (4/324) in a similar manner with an addition at the end, where ʿUmar said: Where was I about this?! The bargaining in the markets distracted me. He said: "It was narrated by al-Bazzār, and Aḥmad narrated: Whatever a man gives to his wife is charity." In their isnād is Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥumayd, who is weak. I say: However, he was not alone in narrating it; he was followed by al-Zabraqān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Umayyah with the wording: "Everything you do for your family is charity." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr" (2/1/396). Its narrators are trustworthy except for ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Umayyah al-Ḍumrī, who is considered acceptable by al-Ḥāfiẓ. Thus, the ḥadīth, with the combination of both chains, is ḥasan, as it has supporting evidence with similar meaning, which can be seen in "al-Targhīb" (3/82).
