while the orphan girl was with Umm Sulaym, who is the mother of Anas, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) saw the orphan girl and said: "Is it you? You have grown up; may your age not increase." The orphan girl returned to Umm Sulaym crying, and Umm Sulaym said: "What is wrong, my dear?" The girl said: "The Prophet of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prayed against me that my age would never increase," or she said: "my horn." Umm Sulaym hurried out, wrapping her headscarf around her, until she met the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to her: "What is wrong, O Umm Sulaym?" She said: "O Prophet of Allāh, did you pray against my orphan girl?" He said: "And what is that, O Umm Sulaym?" She said: "She claimed that you prayed that her age would not increase, nor her horn." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) laughed, then said: "O Umm Sulaym! Do you not know my condition with my Lord? I have stipulated with my Lord and said: I am only a human being, I am pleased as humans are pleased, and I become angry as humans become angry. So, any one of my community whom I pray against with a prayer they do not deserve, may He make it a purification, charity, and a means of drawing closer to Him on the Day of Resurrection."
كانت عند أم سليم يتيمة وهي أم أنس، فرأى رسول الله ﷺ اليتيمة، فقال: آنت هي؟ لقد كبرت لا كبر سنك. فرجعت اليتيمة إلى أم سليم تبكي فقالت أم سليم: ما لك يا بنية؟ فقالت الجارية: دعا علي نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن لا يكبر سني أبدا، أو قالت: قرني. فخرجت أم سليم مستعجلة تلوث خمارها حتى لقيت رسول الله ﷺ فقال لها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ما لك يا أم سليم؟ فقالت يا نبي الله، أدعوت على يتيمتي؟ قال: وما ذاك يا أم سليم؟ قالت: زعمت أنك دعوت أن لا يكبر سنها، ولا يكبر قرنها. قال: فضحك رسول الله ﷺ، ثم قال: يا أم سليم! أما تعلمين أن شرطي على ربي؟ أني اشترطت على ربي فقلت: إنما أنا بشر أرضى كما يرضى البشر، وأغضب كما يغضب البشر، فأيما أحد دعوت عليه من أمتي بدعوة ليس لها بأهل، أن يجعلها له طهورا وزكاة وقربة يقربه بها منه يوم القيامة.
O Umm Sulaym! Do you not know my condition with my Lord? I have stipulated with my Lord and said: I am only a human being, I am pleased as humans are pleased, and I become angry as humans become angry. So, any one of my community whom I pray against with a prayer they do not deserve, may He make it a purification, charity, and a means of drawing closer to Him on the Day of Resurrection. (From Umm Sulaym): Then Imām Muslim followed this ḥadīth with the ḥadīth of Muʿāwiyah and concluded the chapter with it, indicating that they are of the same category and meaning.
