"The souls of the believers are in the bodies of green birds that perch on the trees of Paradise." It was narrated by Ibn Mājah (1449), al-Ḥarbī in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (5/210/1), and Ibn Mandah in "al-Maʿrifah" (2/363/1) from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Ḥārith ibn Faḍīl, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik, from his father who said: "When Kaʿb was on his deathbed, Umm Mubashshir bint al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr entered and said: O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, if you meet my son, convey my greetings to him. He said: May Allāh forgive you, O Umm Mubashshir, we are too occupied for that. She said: O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, did you not hear the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say (and he mentioned it)? He said: Yes. She said: That is it." I said: This isnād is weak. Its narrators are trustworthy, but its defect is Ibn Isḥāq, as he used to practice tadlīs, and it appears he received it from some weak narrators and then omitted them. It was narrated by Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik, who said: "Umm Mubashshir said to Kaʿb ibn Mālik while he was ill: Convey my greetings to my son—meaning Mubashshir. He said: May Allāh forgive you, O Umm Mubashshir, did you not hear what the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: The soul of a Muslim is a bird that perches on the trees of Paradise until Allāh returns it to its body on the Day of Resurrection! She said: You have spoken the truth, so I seek Allāh's forgiveness." It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/455). I said: This isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. It contradicts what was narrated by Ibn Isḥāq, as her saying "You have spoken the truth, so I seek Allāh's forgiveness" clearly indicates that Kaʿb established the proof against her, contrary to Ibn Isḥāq's narration, which is the opposite
