then I found another route for it from Jābir explicitly stating that he heard it from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). It was recorded by al-Khaṭīb (12/250-251) through the route of ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī, who narrated to us from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar al-Maqdamī, who narrated from his father, from Fiṭr ibn Khalīfah, from Abū Khalīfah, from Abū Khālid al-Wālibī, who said: Jābir ibn Samurah al-Suwāʾī narrated to us, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) say: "This matter will remain apparent, unharmed by those who oppose it." And he said: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar al-Maqdamī narrated to us from his father, from Fiṭr ibn Khalīfah, from Maʿd ibn Khālid al-Jadalī, from Jābir ibn Samurah, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) similarly. Both chains of narration have trustworthy men, except that the first chain includes Abū Khālid al-Wālibī, about whom it is said in "al-Taqrīb": acceptable, meaning his ḥadīth is weak. As for the narrator from him, Abū Khalīfah, I did not recognize him. Perhaps the original is Fiṭr ibn Khalīfah ibn Abī Khalīfah, and the word (ibn) was miscopied by the scribe as (ʿan), as often happens in isnāds. And Allāh knows best. The ḥadīth has been authentically reported through another route with the wording: "The religion will remain established until the Hour is established or there will be twelve caliphs over you, all of them from Quraysh."
