- "The best of people is every person with a pure heart and truthful tongue." They said, "We know what a truthful tongue is, but what is a pure heart?" He said, "It is the one that is pious and pure, with no sin, transgression, malice, or envy." Narrated by Ibn Mājah (4216) and Ibn ʿAsākir (17/29/2) through two chains from Yaḥyá ibn Ḥamzah, who said: Zayd ibn Wāqid narrated to me from Mughīth ibn Sumay al-Awzāʿī from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr who said: "It was said: O Messenger of Allāh, who are the best of people? He said: Every person with a pure heart..." I say: This isnād is authentic, its men are trustworthy. Al-Qāsim ibn Mūsá also followed it up from Zayd ibn Wāqid. It was extracted by Ibn ʿAsākir, who said: "And likewise it was narrated by Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid from Zayd." I say: Ibn ʿAsākir added from the path of al-Qāsim ibn Mūsá, and in one of the two paths from Yaḥyá ibn Ḥamzah: "They said: Who follows him, O Messenger of Allāh? He said: The one who despises the world and loves the hereafter. They said: We do not know this among us except Rāfiʿ, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." They said: Who follows him? He said: A believer with good character." Al-Suyūṭī attributed it in "Ziyādah al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr" to Ibn Mājah with this addition, but it is not with him as I have seen. He attributed it in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr" to al-Ḥakīm, al-Ṭabarānī, Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah," and al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab," so it appears that the addition is theirs or at least some of them.
