avoid the prohibitions and you will be the most devout of people; be content with what Allāh has allotted for you and you will be the richest of people; be good to your neighbor and you will be a believer; love for people what you love for yourself and you will be a Muslim; and do not laugh excessively, for excessive laughter deadens the heart. It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/50), Aḥmad (2/310), and al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 42) through the route of Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān from Abū Ṭāriq from al-Ḥasan from Abū Hurayrah in marfūʿ form. Al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a strange ḥadīth, and al-Ḥasan did not hear anything from Abū Hurayrah." I said: The correct view is that he did hear from him in general, as clarified by al-Ḥāfiẓ in "Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb," but al-Ḥasan is a mudallis, so what he narrates with an ambiguous chain, as in this ḥadīth, is not used as evidence. Moreover, there is another defect, which is the unknown status of this Abū Ṭāriq; al-Dhahabī said: "He is not known." However, there is another route for the ḥadīth from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Mundhirī (3/237) said: "It was narrated by al-Bazzār and al-Bayhaqī in the book 'al-Zuhd' from Makhūl from Wāthilah. Makhūl heard from Wāthilah, as stated by al-Tirmidhī and others, but the rest of its chain contains weakness." I said: And from this aspect, al-Kharāʾiṭī recorded it with another chain from Makhūl with the wording: (Be pious and you will be the most devout of people; be content and you will be the most grateful of people; love for people what you love for yourself and you will be a believer; and be a good neighbor to those who neighbor you and you will be a Muslim). It was recorded by al-Kharāʾiṭī (p. 39), who said: Naṣr ibn Dāwūd al-Ṣāghānī narrated to us: Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī narrated to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Zakarīyā narrated from Abū Rajāʾ from Burd ibn Sinān from Makhūl from Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ from Abū Hurayrah
