It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3/14), al-Ḥākim (2/68), al-Bayhaqī (9/160), and Aḥmad (2/524), and through his route by ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī in "al-Sunnah" (249/2) from Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, from Abū Hurayrah. that a man from the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) passed by a valley with a spring of fresh water, and he was pleased with its pleasantness. He said, "If only I could stay in this valley and isolate myself from people, but I will not do so until I seek permission from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." So he mentioned that to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said: "Do not do so, for the standing of ...!" [the ḥadīth continues]. al-Maqdisī said: "This isnād is authentic." al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim!" and al-Dhahabī agreed with him! I say: There is some discussion regarding Hishām ibn Saʿd concerning his memory, so his ḥadīth is considered ḥasan, but it is not according to the criteria of Muslim, as he only included him in supporting narrations, as al-Ḥākim himself said, and this statement was also transmitted in "al-Mīzān" from him! It seems for this reason al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan ḥadīth." However, the ḥadīth is authentic due to other supporting narrations, as it has a corroborating narration from Abū Umāmah who said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ..." a similar ḥadīth without the statement: "Do you not love ...". Aḥmad narrated it (5/266) with a weak isnād. Its first part, meaning: "The standing of one of you..." was narrated by al-Dārimī (2/202), and from him by al-Ḥākim (2/68), as well as by Ibn ʿAsākir in "al-Arbaʿīn fī al-Jihād" (ḥadīth number 13 - my copy) and al-Bayhaqī (9/161) through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, who reported from Yaḥyá ibn Ayyūb, from Hishām, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. al-Ḥākim said:
