a section from "al-Mukhtārah" (p. 89/1) through the route of Ibn Samʿān and Rushdīn ibn Saʿd from ʿUqayl, both from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām, from his father, who said: "O Messenger of Allāh, tell me something I can hold onto." He said: "Control this," and he pointed to his tongue. I said: And this isnād is weak. Ibn Samʿān's name is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ziyād ibn Sulaymān ibn Samʿān al-Makhzūmī, and he is abandoned. And Rushdīn ibn Saʿd is weak, but the ḥadīth is authentic due to what precedes it. Then I found another supporting narration, related by Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī from Sulaymān ibn Ḥabīb from Aswad ibn Aṣram al-Muhāribī, who said: "I said: O Messenger of Allāh, advise me." He said: "Control your hand." He said: "What can I control if I do not control my hand?" He said: "Control your tongue." He said: "What can I control if I do not control my tongue?" He said: "Do not extend your hand except in goodness, and do not speak with your tongue except what is known to be good." It was narrated by Abū Nuʿaym in "Akhbār Aṣbahān" (2/179). And Ṣadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allāh, also known as Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Samīn, is weak.
