It was recorded by Mālik (2/985/5), al-Tirmidhī (2/52), Ibn Mājah (3969), Ibn Ḥibbān (1576), al-Ḥākim (1/45-46), Aḥmad (3/469), al-Ḥumaydī (911), and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (10/279 and 286, published by the Scientific Academy) through various chains from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah from his father (from his grandfather) from Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith al-Muzanī that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "It is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth, and several others narrated it from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr in a similar manner. They said: from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr from his father from his grandfather from Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith. Mālik narrated this ḥadīth from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr from his father from Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith, not mentioning from his grandfather." I said: There are other aspects of variation that Ibn ʿAsākir recorded, then he said: All these isnāds have defects, and the correct one is the narration of Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah from his father from his grandfather, as it was narrated by al-Thawrī, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and others. Then he presented all their narrations, confirming that this is the preserved one. Then he narrated it through other chains from ʿAlqamah ibn Waqāṣ al-Laythī from Bilāl with it. And this ʿAlqamah is a reliable and trustworthy narrator, thus the ḥadīth is authentic. All praise is due to Allāh. And there is a corroborating report for the ḥadīth from Abū Hurayrah, raised to the Prophet, similar to it but abridged, and it has been mentioned under number (537).
