- "The heaviest thing in the scale is good character." Narrated by Dāwūd (2/389), Aḥmad (6/446 and 448), al-Ghaṭrīf in "His Ḥadīth" (no. 89 - my manuscript), and al-Kharāʾiṭī in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 9) through the chain of Shuʿbah from al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazzah from ʿAṭāʾ al-Kīkhārānī from Umm al-Dardāʾ from Abū al-Dardāʾ from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who said: and he mentioned it. The wording is from al-Ghaṭrīf, while the wording of the others is: "There is nothing in the scale heavier than good character." I say: This chain is authentic, and Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it (1921). Al-Ḥasan ibn Muslim followed it from his uncle ʿAṭāʾ ibn Nāfiʿ with the wording of al-Ghaṭrīf, and in another narration with the wording: "The best thing in the scale on the Day of Judgment is good character." Narrated by Aḥmad (6/442) and its chain is also authentic. Qabīṣah ibn al-Laith followed it from Muṭarrif from ʿAṭāʾ with the same wording as al-Ghaṭrīf with Abū Dāwūd and Aḥmad, and added: "And indeed, the person with good character reaches the rank of the one who fasts and prays." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī (3/146) who said: "A strange ḥadīth from this perspective." I say: Its chain is good. Yaʿlá ibn Mamlak followed it from Umm al-Dardāʾ with a more complete version, and its wording is: "Whoever is given his share of gentleness is given his share of goodness, and there is nothing heavier..." the ḥadīth
