It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "Mukhtaṣar Makārim al-Akhlāq" (1/120/1). I said: This isnād has trustworthy men, the men of Muslim, except for the man who was not named. Some have omitted him, as Aḥmad said (2/387), Bahz narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated from Abū ʿImrān from Abū Hurayrah. "that a man complained..." the ḥadīth without the phrase: "If you want to soften your heart." I said: This isnād appears sound, but the first isnād reveals a defect and shows that between Abū ʿImrān and Abū Hurayrah is the unnamed man. It seems that al-Haythamī did not come across the first isnād, as he mentioned it in the wording of the other isnād and said (8/160): "Aḥmad narrated it, and its men are the men of the Ṣaḥīḥ!" al-Manārī understood from this that he meant the isnād is authentic, saying: "Aḥmad narrated with an isnād that al-Haythamī, following his teacher al-Zayn al-ʿIrāqī, said: authentic..." and he mentioned it in the second wording. I said: This understanding is incorrect because his statement: "and its men are the men of the Ṣaḥīḥ" means no more than one condition of authenticity is met, which is the trustworthiness of the men and that they are from the men of the Ṣaḥīḥ. As for its freedom from a critical defect, such as a break in the chain, this statement does not negate it. So be aware. Yes, the ḥadīth has a supporting narration that can elevate it to the level of ḥasan, which is what al-Ṭabarānī narrated in "al-Kabīr" from Abū al-Dardāʾ who said: "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ complaining of the hardness of his heart.
