"Do you know who the bankrupt is?" They said, "The bankrupt among us is the one who has neither dirhams nor goods." He said, "The bankrupt of my nation is the one who comes on the Day of Judgment with prayer, fasting, and zakāh, but he comes having insulted this person, slandered that person, consumed the wealth of this person, shed the blood of that person, and struck this person. So, this person is given from his good deeds, and that person is given from his good deeds. If his good deeds are exhausted before his debts are settled, then sins from them are taken and cast upon him, and then he is thrown into the Fire." It was recorded by Muslim (8/18), al-Tirmidhī (3/291-292), and Aḥmad (2/303, 334, 372) from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from his father from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good and authentic ḥadīth." I said: And al-Bukhārī commented in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (8/35) on part of its beginning with the wording: "The bankrupt is the one who is bankrupt on the Day of Judgment."

"Do you know what these two books are?" We said, "No, O Messenger of Allāh, unless you inform us." He said to the one in his right hand, "This is a book from the Lord of the worlds, in it are the names of the people of Paradise, and the names of their fathers and their tribes, then it is concluded with the last of them, and none will be added to them nor subtracted from them ever." Then he said to the one in his left hand, "This is a book from the Lord of the worlds, in it are the names of the people of the Fire, and the names of their fathers and their tribes, then it is concluded with the last of them, and none will be added to them nor subtracted from them." His companions said, "Then what is the purpose of deeds, O Messenger of Allāh, if the matter has already been decided?" He said, "Do your best and come close to perfection, for the person of Paradise will have his end sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise, even if he does any deed, and the person of the Fire will have his end sealed with the deeds of the people of the Fire, even if he does any deed." Then the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) gestured with his hands and cast them, then said, "Your Lord has finished with the servants, a group in Paradise and a group in the blazing Fire."
