it was also narrated by Ibn ʿAbbās from Abū. It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī. I say: Its chain of transmission is good. It has supporting evidence from the ḥadīth of Abū Bakrah al-Thaqafī with a similar wording. It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/41, 51) and Ibn Abī Shaybah (12/68/1). In it is ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, who is weak. The last part of it has supporting evidence from the ḥadīth of Ibn Masʿūd with the wording: "I have been commanded to recite the Qurʾān in seven modes. Each is sufficient and complete." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarī (vol. 1, no. 43, page 45). He said: Yūnus narrated to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, Sulaimān ibn Bilāl informed me from Abū ʿĪsá ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd from his father from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd. that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "and he mentioned it." I say: This chain of transmission consists of trustworthy men except for Abū ʿĪsá ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, whom I did not recognize. It is indeed a problematic chain, as noted by the scholar Aḥmad Shākir in his commentary on al-Ṭabarī, for his statement "from his grandfather" implies that the narrator of the ḥadīth is Masʿūd, the father of ʿAbd Allāh, not ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd. This is not found in the books of sunnah. It appears that Abū ʿĪsá was attributed to his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, which is known, but who is the father of Abū ʿĪsá? Indeed, who is Abū ʿĪsá himself? This has not become clear to us. It is possible that he is al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd or his brother Maʿn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, for each of them narrates from his father from his grandfather. However, this possibility is unlikely because the first's kunya is Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and the other's kunya is Abū al-Qāsim, so Allāh knows best.
