She said: He kept blaming me until I wished that the earth would split open for me at that moment and I would enter it! She said: The man lifted the helmet from his face, and it was Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh. He said: O ʿUmar, you have spoken much today, and where is the retreat or escape except to Allāh ﷿? She said: A man from the Quraysh polytheists, called Ibn al-ʿArqah, shot an arrow at Saʿd and said to him: "Take this, for I am Ibn al-ʿArqah." It struck his median nerve and severed it. Saʿd then supplicated to Allāh ﷿, saying: O Allāh, do not let me die until my eyes are satisfied with the Qurayẓah. She said: They were allies of his in the pre-Islamic period. She said: His wound was treated, and Allāh ﷿ sent the wind against the polytheists, and Allāh sufficed the believers in the battle. And Allāh is Strong and Mighty. Abū Sufyān and those with him retreated to Tihāmah, and ʿUyainah ibn Baḍr and those with him retreated to Najd. The Banū Qurayẓah returned and fortified themselves in their strongholds. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) set out and passed by the Banū Ghanm, who were neighbors of the mosque around it. He said: Who passed by you? They said: Dihyah al-Kalbī passed by us, and Dihyah al-Kalbī's beard, age, and face resembled Jibrīl (ʿalayhi al-salām). She said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came to them and besieged them for twenty-five nights. When their siege became severe and the calamity intensified, it was said to them: Descend on the judgment of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). They consulted Abū Lubābah ibn ʿAbd al-Mundhir, and he indicated to them that it was slaughter. They said: We will descend on the judgment of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: Descend on the judgment of Saʿd ibn Muʿādh. So they descended, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent for Saʿd ibn Muʿādh. He was brought on a donkey with a saddle of palm fiber, and he was carried, surrounded by his people who said: O Abū ʿAmr, your allies, your clients, and those who have caused harm, and those whom you know.
