It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (8/79 - Nahḍah) and in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (803), Muslim (3/76), al-Tirmidhī (3/269), and Aḥmad (5/152) through the route of Zayd ibn Wahb from Abū Dharr who said: "One night I went out, and I found the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) walking alone with no one accompanying him. I thought he disliked anyone walking with him, so I walked in the shadow of the moon. He turned and saw me and said: 'Who is this?' I said: 'Abū Dharr, may Allāh make me your ransom.' He said: 'O Abū Dharr, come here.' So I walked with him for a while, and he said: 'Those who have much are the least on the Day of Resurrection, except for those whom Allāh has given goodness, and they spend it generously to their right, left, in front of them, and behind them, and they do good with it.'" He said: So I walked with him for a while, and he said: 'Sit here.' He made me sit in a place surrounded by stones and said to me: 'Sit here until I return to you.' He said: Then he went off into the rocky area until I could no longer see him. He stayed away for a long time, and then I heard him as he was coming back saying: 'Even if he steals and commits adultery!' He said: When he came back, I could not hold myself and said: 'O Prophet of Allāh, may Allāh make me your ransom, who was speaking in the rocky area? I did not hear anyone return anything to you.' He said ... and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī only has from it the saying: 'Jibrīl came to me and gave me glad tidings that whoever dies without associating anything with Allāh will enter Paradise.' I said: 'Even if he commits adultery and steals?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: This is a ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ, and there is a similar narration from Abū al-Dardāʾ. I said: And it was also recorded in this concise form like al-Tirmidhī by al-Bukhārī (4/90) and Muslim from this perspective. And it was also followed by al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd from Abū Dharr with it
