it was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/106), al-Dārimī (2/250), Ibn Mājah (2/16), and al-Dāraqutnī (297) through the route of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylá from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from his father from him with it. Ibn Abī Laylá had poor memory, but he was followed by ʿUmar ibn Qays al-Māṣir, who is trustworthy. It was narrated from him by al-Dāraqutnī with a sound isnād, but a group contradicted them, narrating it from al-Qāsim from Ibn Masʿūd without "from his father." It was recorded by al-Dāraqutnī from Abū al-ʿUmays, who is ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, and by al-Ṭayālisī (no. 399) and Aḥmad (1/466) from al-Masʿūdī, and by Aḥmad from Maʿn, who is Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, all three from al-Qāsim with it. Thus, it is mursal, and al-Tirmidhī (1/240) said it is mursal. However, it could be said that the one who connected it is trustworthy, and this addition must be mentioned. And Allāh knows best. A second route: it was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (2/230), al-Dāraqutnī, and Aḥmad through the route of Abū ʿUbaydah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd from his father. This is also mursal. A third route: it was recorded by al-Tirmidhī and Aḥmad through the route of Ibn ʿAjlān from ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh from him. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A mursal ḥadīth, ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh did not meet Ibn Masʿūd." A fourth route, which is connected, was recorded by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Dāraqutnī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Qays ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ashʿath from his father from his grandfather from him. This isnād is ḥasan except that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Qays is of unknown status, as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." As for the statement of those who said it is mursal, there is no basis for it. It was also recorded by al-Ḥākim (2/45) from this route, and he said:
