- "Whoever acquires knowledge from the stars has acquired a branch of sorcery." It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd (3905), Ibn Mājah (3726), Aḥmad (1 / 227, 311), and al-Ḥarbī in "al-Gharīb" (5 / 195 / 1) from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-Akhnaṣ from al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Yūsuf ibn Māhak from Ibn ʿAbbās as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I said: This isnād is good; all its men are trustworthy. ʿUbayd Allāh ibn al-Akhnaṣ was deemed trustworthy by Aḥmad, Ibn Maʿīn, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Ḥibbān, except that he said "he makes many mistakes"! So I do not think his statement should be given much weight!

- "Indeed, a man may attain through his good character the rank of one who prays at night and fasts during the day." It was narrated by Tamām in "al-Fawāʾid" (13 / 234 / 1 - 2) through the route of ʿAfīr ibn Maʿdān from Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir from Abū Umāmah that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād is weak; ʿAfīr was said by al-Ḥāfiẓ and others to be "weak." Others said "very weak." It was also narrated through his route by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" as in the Ẓāhiriyyah collection (fol. 24 / 1, collection 6) and in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr" and its commentary by al-Munāwī, and he added: "al-Ḥākim narrated it from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, and he said it is according to their conditions, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. So if the author had preferred it for its authenticity, it would have been more appropriate than preferring this due to its weakness."
