I said: I did not see it with this wording in al-Ḥākim's work, but al-Kharāʾiṭī included a similar version in "Makārim al-Akhlāq" (p. 9) through the chain of Faḍīl ibn Sulaymān al-Namirī from Ṣāliḥ ibn Khawāt from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyá ibn Ḥibbān from Abū Ṣāliḥ from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "A man can attain through good character the ranks of one who fasts and prays while thirsty in the midday heat." I said: Its isnād is good, its narrators are trustworthy, the narrators of the two Shaykhs - except for a weakness in al-Namirī - other than Ṣāliḥ ibn Khawāt, and a group has narrated from him. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" and al-Bukhārī included a similar narration from him in "al-Mufrad" (284). As for al-Ḥākim, his wording is: "Indeed, Allāh elevates a servant through good character to the rank of fasting and prayer." He included it (1/60) through the chain of Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mustamir al-ʿUrūqī who reported from Ḥibbān ibn Hilāl who reported from Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Badīl from ʿAṭāʾ from Abū Hurayrah. He said: "Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: al-ʿUrūqī is not among his narrators, so it is only authentic.

It was included by Abū Dāwūd (4798), Ibn Ḥibbān (1927), and al-Ḥākim (1/60) through the chain of ʿAmr ibn Abī ʿAmr from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā), who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. Al-Ḥākim said: "Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him
