"If you hear a ḥadīth from me that your hearts recognize, your hair and skin soften to it, and you see that it is close to you, then I am closest to it. But if you hear a ḥadīth from me that your hearts reject, your hair and skin recoil from it, and you see that it is distant from you, then I am furthest from it." Narrated by Ibn Saʿd (1/387-388): ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Maslamah ibn Qaʿnab informed us, saying: Sulaimān ibn Bilāl informed us from Rabīʿah from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Saʿīd from Abū Ḥumayd or Abū Usayd as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. I said: This isnād is good, and it meets the criteria of Muslim. It was also narrated by ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī in "al-ʿIlm" (2/43/2) through another route from Sulaimān ibn Bilāl with the same content. It was also narrated by Ibn Wahb in "al-Musnad" (8/164/2) who informed me from al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Rabīʿah ibn Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān with the same content. And by Ibn Ḥibbān (92) and al-Bazzār as mentioned in "al-Aḥkām al-Kubrā" number (101). I clarified in my commentary on it the reason for it being considered good and who authenticated it, and that the ḥadīth is specific to a certain class of scholars. Al-Bukhārī also included it in "al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr" (2/1/434) through the route of Ibn Abī Dhiʾb from Saʿīd al-Maqburī from the Prophet ﷺ with similar wording, and Yaḥyā said it was from Abū Hurayrah, which is an error, as it is actually from Saʿīd ibn Kaysān. I said: Thus, it is a strong mursal witness.
