- "Rejoice, O Umm al-ʿAlāʾ, for the illness of a Muslim removes his sins as fire removes the impurities of gold and silver." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (3092): Sahl ibn Bakkār narrated to us from Abū ʿAwānah from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr from Umm al-ʿAlāʾ who said: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) visited me while I was ill, and he said..." and she mentioned it. I said: This is a good isnād, and its narrators are trustworthy, the men of al-Bukhārī, though there is some discussion about some of them which does not harm [the authenticity]. (Note): al-Suyūṭī included this ḥadīth in "al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr" (1/6/2) only from the narration of al-Ṭabarānī from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ! And al-Haythamī did not include it in "al-Majmaʿ" because it is in "al-Sunan," so it is not according to his conditions. There is another chain for the ḥadīth from Umm al-ʿAlāʾ with the wording: "Be patient, for it (meaning the pain of fever) removes the impurities of a believer as fire removes the impurities of iron." Narrated by Ibn al-Sakan and Ibn Mandah from the chain of al-Zubaydī from Yūnus ibn Sayf that Ḥarām ibn Ḥakīm informed him from his aunt Umm al-ʿAlāʾ. "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) visited her during a fever, and saw her writhing from the intensity of the pain and said to her..." The ḥadīth.
