I said: And this Ismāʿīl is truthful, as Abū Ḥātim said, and he is the brother of the imām ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maslamah. Al-Dhahabī said: "I know of no fault in him except that he is not as reliable as his brother." I said: Then he mentioned a ḥadīth in which he erred in raising it, but this does not detract from him because no human is free from error. Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Ḥākim deemed him reliable, so the ḥadīth has a good isnād, as those above him are the well-known trustworthy ones, except for a common disagreement regarding Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, which does not harm it nor prevent the use of his ḥadīth as evidence. The ḥadīth was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Sunan" (2/266) from this perspective, and he said: "If this is authentic, then he intended—Allāh knows best—that it suffices to fulfill the command, for the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded to kill it, and he intended—Allāh knows best—if it defends itself by error and did not intend to prohibit more than one strike." Al-Manāwī did not comment on the ḥadīth, as if he did not review its isnād.
