Abū Nuʿaym in "Akhbār Aṣbahān" (2/214) and al-Daylamī (1/1/34) through the route of Khālid ibn Ilyās from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah from his father from ʿĀʾishah that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. Ibn ʿAdī said: "And this is narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah by Khālid ibn Ilyās." Meaning that he was alone in narrating it, and he is very weak, and it was narrated through his route by al-Bazzār as in "al-Majmaʿ" by al-Haythamī who said (5/164): "He is abandoned." Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "Mukhtaṣar al-Daylamī": "Weak." I say: However, he was not alone in it, for Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh followed him, but he differed in his isnād, saying: from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir from Jābir who said: "Abū Qatādah had long hair, so the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: Honor it. So he would comb it occasionally." It was narrated by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (2/265/2) and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (8/509/1) and likewise al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" as in "al-Majmaʿ" who said: "It was narrated from the narration of Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from the Hijāzīs and it is weak, but the rest of its narrators are trustworthy." However, the ḥadīth has many supporting narrations indicating its authenticity, and they have been mentioned under the ḥadīth (500- Whoever has hair, let him honor it). Among what supports it is what was also narrated by al-Bayhaqī through the route of Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr who narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Razzāq who narrated from Maʿmar from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jarshī from their elders that the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to Abū Qatādah: "If you have (hair), then honor it."
