"al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ," which is an error, for al-Haythamī only attributed it to "al-Ṣaghīr" and said: "In it is Muḥammad ibn Kathīr ibn Marwān al-Fihrī, who is weak." I say: Rather, he is very weak as I have clarified there. It has a supporting narration from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī in a mursal form. It was produced by Ibn al-Marzubān in "Kitāb al-Murūʾah" (1/2) from ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Qurashī, who reported to us from ʿAlī ibn Sulaymān from al-Faḍl ibn Rūḥ from him. This isnād is obscure; I do not know those after al-Ḥasan. Al-Qurashī might be Abū al-Ḥasan al-Madāʾinī, the historian and author, about whom there is some discussion. Then it was narrated through the route of Ibrāhīm ibn al-Faḍl from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā) in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Overlook the stumbles of the one with dignity, for by the One in whose hand is my soul, one of them stumbles while his hand is in the hand of Allāh." This is very weak, for besides its disconnection, it contains Ibrāhīm ibn al-Faḍl, who is abandoned. The previously mentioned routes and supporting narrations are sufficient. And Allāh knows best. As for what was narrated by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh Abū ʿUmar al-Ramlī, who reported to us from Dhū al-Nūn ibn Ibrāhīm al-Zāhid al-Miṣrī, who reported to us from Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ al-Zāhid, who reported to us from Layth from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Overlook the sin of the generous, the slip of the scholar, and the harshness of the just ruler, for Allāh, the Exalted, takes them by the hand whenever one of them stumbles."
