Sufyān al-Thawrī narrated to us from al-Aʿmash from Abū Wāʾil from him. Abū Nuʿaym said: "This is a rare ḥadīth from al-Aʿmash and al-Thawrī, uniquely narrated by Wakīʿ." I said: He is trustworthy and reliable, as are those above him, so the chain is authentic if it is free from issues with those below him. This is what Abū Nuʿaym's statement "uniquely narrated by Wakīʿ" indicates, as it implies that those below him did not narrate it uniquely. This contradicts what al-Khaṭīb narrated from al-Dāraquṭnī, who said: "No one narrated it except Abū Ḥāmid." I said: This refers to al-Ḥaḍramī, who is also trustworthy, but his teacher al-ʿAjlī is criticized. Abū Ḥātim said: "Truthful." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" and said: He might make mistakes, and Aḥmad said: I do not know him. Ibn ʿAdī said: "He steals ḥadīth and his narrations are not followed." I said: If he was followed in it, as the implication of Abū Nuʿaym's previous statement suggests, then the isnād is authentic. However, I find this unlikely due to what was previously mentioned from al-Dāraquṭnī, and because al-ʿAjlī was contradicted in his isnād! Ibn Abī Shaybah said in "al-Muṣannaf" (7/141/1): Wakīʿ narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Ashhab narrated to us from al-Ḥasan, who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, and he mentioned it with the wording of al-ʿAjlī. This is the authentic narration from Wakīʿ, and it is an authentic mursal isnād, so in any case, it serves as supporting evidence
