and al-Ḥākim and Ibn ʿAsākir in "Tārīkh Dimashq" (19/84/1-2) from the route of al-Qāsim ibn Mukhaimarah that Abū Maryam al-Azdī informed him, saying: "I entered upon Muʿāwiyah, and he said: 'How gracious we are to you, Abū so-and-so!' which is a phrase the Arabs say. So I said: 'A ḥadīth I heard, I will inform you of it.
