tampering with Ibn al-Zubayr in anything. As for what he increased in its height, he approved it, but what he added from the stones, he returned it to its original construction and closed the door he had opened, demolishing it and restoring it to its original state." This is what the unjust al-Ḥajjāj did by the erroneous command of ʿAbd al-Malik, and I do not think his regret later justifies his mistake. Muslim and Abū Nuʿaym also narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd who said: "al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd Allāh visited ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān during his caliphate. ʿAbd al-Malik said: I do not think Abū Ḥabīb (meaning: Ibn al-Zubayr) heard from ʿĀʾishah what he claimed he heard from her. al-Ḥārith said: Indeed, I heard it from her. He asked: What did you hear her say? He replied: She said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: (I said: so he mentioned the ḥadīth). ʿAbd al-Malik said to al-Ḥārith: Did you hear her say this? He said: Yes. Then he fiddled with his stick for a while and said: I wish I had left it as Ibn al-Zubayr had constructed it." In another narration from both of them from Abū Qazʿah: "While ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān was circumambulating the House, he said: May Allāh curse Ibn al-Zubayr for lying about the Mother of the Believers, claiming he heard her say: (so he mentioned the ḥadīth). al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rabīʿah said: Do not say this, O Commander of the Believers, for I heard the Mother of the Believers narrate this. He said: Had I heard it before I demolished it, I would have left it as Ibn al-Zubayr built it." I say: He should have verified before demolishing and asked the people of knowledge if it was permissible for him to criticize ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr and accuse him of lying about the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). It became clear to ʿAbd al-Malik that he was truthful, by al-Ḥārith's corroboration, as a large group also corroborated it from ʿĀʾishah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā). I have compiled their narrations together in this ḥadīth, which is widely transmitted from ʿĀʾishah. Therefore, I fear that ʿAbd al-Malik was previously aware of the ḥadīth before he demolished the House, but he pretended he had only heard it through Ibn al-Zubayr. When al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd Allāh confronted him, saying he also heard it from ʿĀʾishah, he expressed regret over..
