" and He says—meaning the Lord, to the believers—'Is there a sign between you and Him by which you recognize Him?' They say: 'The shin,' so He uncovers His shin and they prostrate... " It was also narrated by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Asmāʾ wa-al-Ṣifāt" (p. 344) with his chain from Yaḥyá ibn Bukayr, and he said: "It was narrated by al-Bukhārī in 'al-Ṣaḥīḥ' from Ibn Bukayr, and narrated from Ādam ibn Abī Iyyās from al-Layth in a shortened form, and he said in this ḥadīth: 'Our Lord uncovers His shin.'" It was narrated by Muslim from ʿĪsá ibn Ḥammād from al-Layth as narrated by Ibn Bukayr. It was also narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)." I said: Muslim narrated it in "al-Īmān" from his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (1/114-117): Suwayd ibn Saʿīd narrated to me, he said: Ḥafṣ ibn Maysarah narrated to me from Zayd ibn Aslam with it. However, he said: "... they say: 'Yes,' so He uncovers His shin..." then he narrated it from ʿĪsá ibn Ḥammād from al-Layth with it similarly but did not narrate its wording. And from the path of Hishām ibn Saʿd: Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to us with it similarly but did not narrate its wording either, rather he referred in both to the wording of Ḥafṣ's ḥadīth. The ḥadīth of Hishām was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah in "al-Tawḥīd" (p. 113) and likewise by al-Ḥākim (4/582-584) who said: "Its chain is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and in it with him: "Yes, the shin, so He uncovers His shin." It was also narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah and Aḥmad (3/16-17) from the path of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq: Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to us with it in the wording "He said: 'He uncovers His shin.'" The wording of Ibn Bukayr with al-Bukhārī is "Is there a sign between you and Him by which you recognize Him? They say: 'The shin.'" And it is the wording of Muslim from Saʿīd ibn
