and guiding the seeker to a need he knows the place of, and hastening with your legs to the one in distress, and raising your arms with the weak—all of this is from the doors of charity from you to yourself. And you have a reward in your intimacy with your wife. Abū Dharr said: How can I have a reward in my desire? He said: Do you see if you had a child who grew up and you hoped for his good, then he died, would you count it as a reward? I said: Yes. He said: Did you create him? I said: Rather, Allāh created him. He said: Did you guide him? I said: Rather, Allāh guided him. He said: Did you provide for him? I said: Rather, Allāh provided for him. He said: Likewise, place it in its lawful place and avoid its unlawful place, for if Allāh wills, He will give him life, and if He wills, He will cause him to die, and you will have a reward. It was recorded by Imām Aḥmad (5/168): ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, ʿAlī meaning Ibn Mubārak narrated to us, from Yaḥyá, from Zayd ibn Salām, from Abū Salām, Abū Dharr said: for every soul, etc. Thus is the original; it was not elevated, and it appears that it was omitted by the copyist due to the context. And this is a sound chain; all its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim. It was also narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-Nasāʾī as indicated in "al-Muntakhab" (2/535), and Allāh knows best. And it has another, shorter path with the wording: "Your smile in the face of your brother is charity." And it has another ḥadīth: I asked the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam): Which deed is best? He said: "Faith in Allāh and striving in His path." I said: Which slaves are best [to free]? He said: The most expensive and the most valued by their owners. I said: If I cannot do that? He said: Help a craftsman or make something for someone unskilled. I said: If I cannot do that? He said: Leave people from harm, for it is a charity you give to yourself. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (3/117) and in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (34, 46), and Muslim (1/62), and Aḥmad (5/150, 171) from Abū Marwāḥ from him. And with al-Nasāʾī, and for part of it (2/57), the first sentence
