It was recorded by Muslim (8/160), Ibn Mājah (2/545), and Abū Nuʿaym in "al-Ḥilyah" (2/17) through the route of Maṭar al-Warrāq, who reported to me from Qatādah, from Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr, from ʿIyāḍ ibn Ḥimār, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) that he delivered a sermon to them and said: and he mentioned it. I said: This chain of narration consists of trustworthy men, but it has two defects: Qatādah's use of ʿanʿanah [ambiguous transmission] and the poor memory of Maṭar al-Warrāq. Furthermore, Qatādah did not hear this ḥadīth from Muṭarrif, as I have verified in my notes on my book "Mukhtaṣar Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim," which is nearing completion. See ḥadīth (3906) therein. Due to these two defects, there was an effort to trace the paths of the ḥadīth in hopes of finding something to support it. I found it in "Sunan Abī Dāwūd" (2/300) through the route of al-Ḥajjāj, from Qatādah, from Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿIyāḍ with it. I said: This chain is also weak because al-Ḥajjāj, who is Ibn Arṭāʾah, is also a mudallis [one who conceals defects in the chain], and it is disconnected between Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh and ʿIyāḍ. Between them is his brother Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh, as Aḥmad narrated with a sound chain from Qatādah with it, mentioning the sermon, but this ḥadīth is only through the previous route of Maṭar al-Warrāq, as noted in the aforementioned commentary. I found a corroborating witness for the ḥadīth, recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (426) and Ibn Mājah (4214) through the route of Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Sinān ibn Saʿd, from Anas, from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), who said: "Indeed, Allāh has revealed to me that you should humble yourselves and not oppress one another."
