Note: Al-Mundhirī attributed the ḥadīth in "al-Targhīb" (2/94) and was followed in this by al-Khaṭīb al-Tibrīzī in "al-Mishkāt" (1998) to Abū Dāwūd, and this is an error; I do not know where it came from!

"Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allāh, Allāh will place between him and the Fire a trench like that between the heavens and the earth." It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī in "Sunan" (11/32/2) and Abū Ḥazm ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ḥanbalī in "Kitāb al-Furūsiyyah" (1/7/2), both through the route of al-Walīd ibn Jamīl from al-Qāsim Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Abū Umāmah from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who said: and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "This is a ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth from Abū Umāmah." I say: It is as he said, and there is some discussion regarding al-Walīd and his teacher, but their ḥadīth does not fall below the rank of ḥasan, especially since the ḥadīth has a corroborating narration from Abū al-Dardāʾ in a marfūʿ form. It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr" and "al-Awsaṭ" (1/107/1) through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Walīd al-ʿAdanī who narrated to us from Sufyān al-Thawrī from al-Aʿmash from Bishr ibn ʿAṭiyyah from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab from Umm al-Dardāʾ from Abū al-Dardāʾ. And he said: "No one narrated it from Sufyān except ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Walīd." I say: He is trustworthy, though he may have erred as the ḥāfiẓ said, but Shahr ibn Ḥawshab is weak due to his poor memory, so he is used as supporting evidence. Thus, the statement of al-Mundhirī in "al-Targhīb" (2/62) and followed by al-Haythamī (3/194): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ and al-Ṣaghīr' with a ḥasan isnād" is not ḥasan unless he meant it is ḥasan due to other supporting evidence, then yes
