Allāh said: "Pride is My cloak and majesty is My garment; whoever contends with Me regarding either of them, I will cast him into the Fire." It was narrated by Aḥmad (2/248): Sufyān narrated to us from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib from al-Agharr from Abū Hurayrah - Sufyān said the first time: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), then he repeated it and said: al-Agharr from Abū Hurayrah - he said... and mentioned it. I said: This isnād [chain of transmission] consists of trustworthy men, the men of the authentic collections, and Sufyān is Ibn ʿUyaynah, and although he heard from ʿAṭāʾ after his memory had deteriorated, he was followed by Sufyān al-Thawrī who heard from him before the deterioration. Aḥmad also said (2/376): ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Sufyān informed us from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib with it. However, he said: "and greatness" instead of "and majesty." It was also narrated by Abū Dāwūd (4090), Ibn Mājah (4174), and Aḥmad as well (2/414, 427, 442) and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Mukhtārah" (61/246/1) from other routes from ʿAṭāʾ with it. It was narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (49 - Mawārid) and Ibn Mājah also (4175) and al-Wāḥidī in his "Tafsīr" (4/61/2) from two other routes from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās as a marfūʿ ḥadīth with it. This is another isnād for ʿAṭāʾ and it may be from his confusions. The first wording is preferred for two reasons: First, that Abū Isḥāq - who is al-Sabīʿī - narrated it from Abū Muslim al-Agharr who narrated it from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī and Abū Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Might is His waistcloth and pride is His cloak; whoever contends with Me regarding either of them, I will punish him." It was narrated by Muslim in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (8/35-36) and al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (552) and the wording is his
