and "al-afāḍil." This is the meaning of what is stated in "al-Ṣiḥāḥ" (203): "If you use it as an adjective, you do not decline it, saying: 'I met him in the first year,' and if you do not use it as an adjective, you decline it, saying: 'I met him in the first year.'" The meaning of "earlier" in the first instance is "the first of this year," and in the second instance, it is "before this year." The "bāʾ" in "bi-al-dhāt" means "in," and it is conjoined to "earlier," meaning "in the essence of the meaning without mediation." End.
والأفاضل، وهذا معنى ما قاله في الصحاح (٢٠٣) : (إذا جعلته صفة لم تصرفه، تقول: لقيته عاماً (٢٠٤) أوّلَ، وإذا لم تجعله صفة صرفته، تقول: لقيته عاماً أَوّلاً (٢٠٥) . أوّل (٢٠٦) معناه في الأوّل: أوّل من هذا العام، وفي الثاني: قبل هذا العام. والباء في (بالذات) بمعنى (في) وهو معطوف على (أوّلاً) (٢٠٧) ، أي: في ذات المعنى بلا واسطة) . انتهى.

ومنها قولهم: وهذا الشيء لا محالةَ كذا
