(al-Bukhārī and Muslim) As for the prayer during intense fear, the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prescribed for his community to pray (standing on their feet or mounted, facing the qiblah or not facing it). And he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: (al-Bayhaqī with a sound isnād) (If they are mixed, then it is only the takbīr and signaling with the head) (al-Tirmidhī and al-Ḥākim). Jābir (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said: (We were with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) on a journey or expedition, and we were overtaken by clouds, so we tried to determine the qiblah and differed in our directions. Each man among us prayed individually, and one of us would draw a line in front of him to mark our places. When morning came, we looked and found that we had not prayed towards the qiblah. We mentioned this to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) [and he did not command us to repeat the prayer] and said: (Your prayer was sufficient) (al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and Aḥmad). And he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to pray towards Bayt al-Maqdis - [with the Kaʿbah in front of him] - before this verse was revealed: We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muḥammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām (Sūrah al-Baqarah, 296). When it was revealed, he faced the Kaʿbah.
